Namesake

We found this book depressing. Focusing on Ashima’s characteristic, we knew that she would be the portrait of ourselves. Language barrier, relationship with her husband and children make her struggle, and even from the end of the book, she couldn’t find a solution. She end up with awkward situation that she doesn’t fit into not only India because she has spent her life in the USA for very long time but also the USA especially after her husband who was the only one she could rely on died. Gogol who takes long time to understand his parents makes touching story plot. Since we share a lot in common with this immigration family, this realistic story makes us somewhat nervous.
